Marine Air Conditioning for Liveaboard Boats

For a holiday boat, capacity is the question. For a liveaboard it is duty cycle, noise compounded over hundreds of nights, and whether you can get a part on a Friday in January.

Cooling, Noise and Service Requirements for Liveaboards

01

Noise stops being an annoyance and becomes a health issue. A 58 dB unit in your sleeping cabin is tolerable for a fortnight's holiday. Over a summer of living aboard it is the thing people replace at their own expense.

02

Serviceability outranks specification. A slightly better unit nobody in your state services is worse than an ordinary one with parts on a shelf in Brisbane.

03

Zoning starts paying for itself. Cooling cabins nobody is in, every day, for months, is real money. Per-cabin thermostats stop being a luxury.

04

The seawater side needs to be maintainable by you. A strainer you cannot reach without unpacking a locker will not get cleaned weekly, and it needs to be.

05

Reverse cycle earns its keep in winter. South of Sydney, the heating is not a bonus feature — it is half the reason to fit the system.

Marine Air Conditioner Options for Living Aboard

These examples illustrate installation choices. They are not a complete market survey or a verified ranking. Compare current exact-model data and obtain an installation assessment.

01Separate-component option

Dometic Emerald split system · 16k example

16,000 BTU cooling No comparable test data Confirm exact model draw Split Size to cabin heat load Request a current quote equipment

Dometic Emerald is a split-system condensing-unit family used with compatible evaporators. Equipment matching, refrigerant routing and controls require a complete system design.

Good

  • Separate condenser and evaporator locations can suit constrained cabin layouts.
  • Manufacturer documentation is linked for exact-model checks.

Against

  • Performance depends on the installation and actual operating conditions.
  • Australian availability, warranty support and final pricing require supplier confirmation.

Watch: Confirm supply voltage, frequency, capacity at design conditions, dimensions, minimum flow, service support and the complete installed price.

02Multiple cooling zones

Webasto BlueCool C27 · chilled water

27,000 BTU cooling No comparable test data Confirm exact model draw Chilled water Size to cabin heat load Request a current quote equipment

Webasto BlueCool C27 is part of the C-Series chilled-water range. A complete installation also needs compatible air handlers, circulation, controls and a designed seawater circuit.

Good

  • A water circuit supplies local air handlers for multiple zones.
  • Manufacturer documentation is linked for exact-model checks.

Against

  • Performance depends on the installation and actual operating conditions.
  • Australian availability, warranty support and final pricing require supplier confirmation.

Watch: Confirm supply voltage, frequency, capacity at design conditions, dimensions, minimum flow, service support and the complete installed price.

03Self-contained option

Dometic Turbo GTX · 16k self-contained

16,000 BTU cooling No comparable test data Confirm exact model draw Self-contained Size to cabin heat load Request a current quote equipment

Dometic Turbo GTX is a self-contained marine air conditioner. Compare the 16,000 BTU configuration with the boat’s design load and confirm the Australian voltage and frequency variant.

Good

  • Refrigeration components packaged together for a defined cooling zone.
  • Manufacturer documentation is linked for exact-model checks.

Against

  • Performance depends on the installation and actual operating conditions.
  • Australian availability, warranty support and final pricing require supplier confirmation.

Watch: Confirm supply voltage, frequency, capacity at design conditions, dimensions, minimum flow, service support and the complete installed price.

04Direct-DC option

Mabru SC12DC · 12 V self-contained

12,000 BTU cooling No comparable test data 22–44 A @ 12 V (published range) draw Self-contained Size to cabin heat load Request a current quote equipment

Mabru SC12DC uses a 12 V DC supply. Battery capacity, permitted current, cabling, protection and the recharge plan must be assessed together before relying on overnight cooling.

Good

  • Refrigeration components packaged together for a defined cooling zone.
  • Manufacturer documentation is linked for exact-model checks.

Against

  • Performance depends on the installation and actual operating conditions.
  • Australian availability, warranty support and final pricing require supplier confirmation.

Watch: Confirm supply voltage, frequency, capacity at design conditions, dimensions, minimum flow, service support and the complete installed price.

Liveaboard Air Conditioning Running Costs

At about 50 cents an hour for a 16k system on typical 2026 marina power, running ten hours a day through a four-month Australian summer comes to roughly $600 on the berth meter. That is usually less than people fear, and it is the strongest argument for a berth over anchoring if you need air conditioning to sleep.

The figure that actually bites is the install, not the running. Which is why the honest advice for a liveaboard is to fit the quieter system once rather than the cheap one twice.
