Do I need an ARCtick licence to install marine air conditioning?

Not for a sealed self-contained unit, which arrives pre-charged. Yes for anything that involves connecting, charging or recovering refrigerant.

Do I need an ARCtick licence to install marine air conditioning — Explanation

Anyone who charges, recovers or handles refrigerant in Australia needs an ARCtick licence. A self-contained unit ships with its refrigerant circuit sealed and charged at the factory, so a competent owner can fit one without touching the gas at all — that is exactly why it is the DIY-friendly option.

A split system or a chilled-water system needs refrigerant lines run and charged on the boat, which is licensed work whatever your skill level. So is any re-gas of an existing unit.

The other licensed part is the 240 V side. Fixed electrical work on a vessel falls under AS/NZS 3004.2 and is an electrician’s job — a dedicated circuit, an RCD and correctly rated cable. Ask any installer to show you their ARCtick licence; it is a normal request and nobody legitimate minds.

Equipment Specifications and Installation Checks

This answer is a practical starting point for Australian boat owners, not a vessel-specific instruction. Confirm the unit manual, electrical supply, seawater layout and current product specifications before spending money or changing the installation. Refrigerant and fixed 240 V work require appropriately licensed people.

Use the official resources for licences, standards and manufacturer documents. If the answer does not fit your boat, ask Gabriel. Advice can be incomplete, out of date or wrong; see the disclaimer.
