Soft start: Marine Air Conditioning Definition

Electronics that limit compressor start-up current so an inverter or small generator can cope.

Soft start in a Boat Air Conditioning System

A fixed-speed compressor pulls three to five times its running current for a fraction of a second at start-up. On a marina lead that is fine. On an inverter or a small generator it usually is not, and a soft-start module — around $350–700 — is what makes the difference.

Using Soft start Specifications in Quotes and Manuals

Use this definition to understand a quote, manual or fault report—not as an instruction to modify the boat. Before buying, compare the wording against the current manufacturer documentation. For refrigerant, fixed 240 V wiring or below-waterline work, use the official licensing and standards sources and an appropriately qualified tradesperson.
