Boat Air Conditioning Shore Power Load Checklist
List simultaneous onboard loads and ask the right questions about marina supply, starting demand and electrical capacity.

A berth power budget starts with everything that may run at the same time. Air conditioning is only one load: battery charging, hot water, cooking and other appliances may share the available supply. Write down the normal evening routine before judging the new system by a single current figure. The boat’s installation and protection must be checked by an appropriately qualified marine electrician.
Marina Outlet Rating and Boat Air Conditioning Supply
Confirm the supply available at your allocated berth with the marina. A general statement about a marina or cruising region does not establish the rating or condition of a particular outlet. Keep the shore lead, inlet and boat documentation available for the electrician. Never treat an improvised adapter or a larger breaker as a way to increase the capacity of an existing connection.
Simultaneous Air Conditioning and Appliance Loads
Record equipment names and the input ratings shown on their labels or manuals. Note which loads are automatic, such as a charger or water heater. Separate a typical overnight case from a busy evening with cooking and charging. Ask the electrician to assess the combination, including starting behaviour and the installed protective devices. Cooling capacity expressed in BTU is not electrical input power.
Shore Power Load-Shedding Plan
If the assessed design depends on switching certain loads off, make that sequence understandable to everyone aboard. A system that is technically workable but repeatedly trips during ordinary use has not met the practical brief. Ask whether load management is appropriate rather than relying on memory. A fault or repeated trip needs investigation; repeatedly resetting protection is not a power-management method.
Boat Air Conditioning Shore Power Checklist
- Confirm the assigned berth supply directly.
- List automatic loads as well as switched appliances.
- Ask for an operating plan and a written electrical scope.
Is this a specification for my boat?
No. This guide helps you prepare observations and questions. Installation details, operating limits and service procedures depend on the vessel and the exact equipment. Use the current manual and a qualified provider to confirm them.
Editorial basis: an original owner-planning checklist, not a product test or a vessel inspection. For model-specific procedures, use the manufacturer’s document library and the official resources. See our editorial policy.
